Mtarfa Goblet with white label - for reference
« on: January 20, 2020, 12:49:27 PM »
Adding these pictures for reference purposes.  I think this might be an early label?  Happy for it to be added to the label gallery.

The clear glass has a distinctive green tint - like bottle glass.  Sharp, chunky remains of pontil.  Sides of glass are approx. 6mm thick.  A shade under 14cm high x 6cm diameter.  Weighs 400g.  Appears green out of the light, but golden amber when help up to sunlight, and has an iridescent comet-y trail similar to some Mdina pieces.

20thCenturyGlass website describes similar pieces as "Sandy glass".

Any ideas about a possible date for this label?

This pair have a slightly different shape, also with those same labels and chunky too. The Mdina influence is more obvious here. Not sure of date but guessing early 1980s, Sue might have a better idea.

I was quite keen on what I call the stuff with splodgy greenish bits - it's similar to methods used at Mdina, but cased more heavily and possibly at a different temperature, so what would have been yellow goes a bit green because of reacting. Sometimes, it is found with bits of dilute cobalt blue though it too.
I do believe the "greenish splodgy" is early Mtarfa. (It does come in "greenish swirly" too.) It predates the weird coiled neck bottles and strange gate-style type sculptures, and is definitely before Mtarfa got a bit more sophisticated and started coming up with their own original designs.

Not sure if this is of much help, I had this label posting on 31st Jan 2015. I have still not learned how to link old messages to new ones.

I wish I'd seen your thread, Tim, I usually search but not this time.  Maybe the threads could be linked by mods.
