Topic: Battuto frosted vases - ID = probably Dartington

Firstly thank you to everyone who helped me identify my last piece of glass.  Well been dragged around the sales again by my daughter the trade off being she didn't moan about being dragged into every charity shop we passed.  During this expedition I found 2 pieces that have definitely got me flummoxed, they have a frosted finish but I feel that the glass has been cut rather than moulded before being frosted - may be wishful thinking on my part as that seems a bit overkill- the smaller is 8" high and the larger 12"

I believe the technique for your two 'petrol' blue vases would be called Battuto.  But I have to say, if I found two vases of a matching style in a charity shop, I'd be concerned they modern representations and not attributable to one particular designer.  I know from experience that battuto style vases have appeared in TKMaxx, and although I was sorely tempted, I didn't purchase (I have enough glass to sink a battleship as it is!) . 

Maybe someone with a better knowledge than me might be able to assist?

Hi Max i may be wrong but my understanding of Battuto is a beaten effect like someone has gone all over it with a small square hammer or chiseled of little random pieces and left unpolished or semi polished.

Photo 17 is the base of the larger vase in 16. I don't think the vases are that recent they are very heavy.  I have tried to photograph the markings close up, not a brilliant camera but what people are saying about chisled does make sense with what I was trying to describe about the feel of the pattern -  any suggestions as to makers, if any one wants more photos of anything in particular let me know and I'll have a go.  thank you for the information so far

I saw a TKMax "battuto" with an IVV label.
These are not quite the same pattern / effect but similar and could also be IVV.

I also believe these "battuto" pieces are recent. There was one posted a while back on the ebay PGP board. Laura (planetglass) said it was possibly from India. They are still nice quality, as the surface is cut, not molded. The first one, I think, is probably an oil lamp missing it's wick.

Hi I just remembered i have a very large vase with the satin finish it has a dimpled centre panel that is all battuto it also has a Dartington studio label.I read somewhere that Charlie Meaker did this style of work for Dartington.I also believe that Anne was looking into Dartington Studio.

Yes, I was wondering about Dartington Studio for these JP. I have a Dartington vase packed away upstairs somewhere which hasn't yet been photographed so I can't compare it directly, but there are similarities from memory.  I've to go into the room the glass is stored in later today so I'll dig it out and get a pic done for comparison. Mine is labelled so it'll be a good ref point.
