Sowerby 'sweet'

I'm not too sure how common a find these are today, but this little dish has the peacock mark in the centre.  It's a Sowerby 'sweet' I've discovered, from Glen and Stephen's 'Sowerby's Ellison Glass Works Vol.1 Victoria to George V' and appeared in the 1895 pattern book :o   It measures 4.5" diam. (almost 6" across if you include the funny little handles) and stands just 1" high.

Just thought I'd share... :)

But that is "newer" because its in Sunglow (I think that's what Sowerby called their carnival, too lazy to find book) and has the Imperial Glass lookalike embossed scroll interior. Not seen that one before  :hiclp:

Anne² — The Victorian original had a smooth interior.   This rather splendid peacock's eye interior pattern was a later (c.1920s?) modification to the mould for their Sunglow / Rainbow iridised glass.   Like Christine, I can't recall seeing this before.

Congratulations, Anne - it's a little beauty - and this version, in marigold Carnival, is not often seen. In fact it's always a delight to find any Sowerby Carnival with a moulded peacock head trademark on it.

Your piece is known to collectors as "Jewelled Peacock" (named for the exterior design / peacock head mark). The interior is (as noted above) a later addition and is the Sowerby version of Imperial's "Scroll Embossed" (also used on the Diving Dolphins bowls).

Two other exteriors were teamed up with the Scroll Embossed interior on little "sweet" dishes. These often get called "ashtrays" by (mistaken) collectors.

We wrote about these items, and showed a range of colour photos of the piece you have ("Jewelled Peacock") in "A Century of Carnival Glass" (2001) and in "The Art of Carnival Glass" (2004).

A BIG thank you folks!  Not quite as old as I first thought, but still worth getting up at 7am on a Sunday morning for.  Its a nice little dish and I like the way that the exterior pattern is different from the interior.
