Two Baskets are they both Czech?
« on: April 02, 2008, 09:43:30 PM »
I have put these up together to give a comparison of the different shape and style of baskets but could they be made by the same maker. Czech, i have seen these on here and ebay as possible Murano, but no sure ID of that yet, perhaps being side by side we can pick the bone as they say.

the first is 6.5ins high with polished pontil clear with some rd and green in. the other torquoise the handles clear at the top, also at the base which is polished. stands 6ins high 7ins in width.

Hi Gilead,
I'm curious about the first two baskets you have and wondered if they could be Japanese?
I found this photo described as Japanese style and features a similar top knot on the handle. Also, I have one with a Foreign label.

Here's a photo of the label on one I've just bought. Maybe you or someone can tell something more from it.

I am pretty sure this basket is not Japanese

Either French late 19th century or Harrach.  I think possibly French.

Not the same as the original baskets posted in either time frame or maker I don't think.

Hi flyingfree. Wow! You're absolutely right about the basket in the photo being French. I can't remember the maker, I think it was a woman's name, like Josephine..I should've taken the picture with text. I only included it because the text said it was in a  Japanese style and to compare it to Gileads. The twisted top knot looked similar, but I see they feature on a LOT of baskets! Referring back to the first two baskets in the post, do you think they're either Murano or Czech? The Foriegn label belongs to one just like that, wouldn't it say Murano or Italy if it was?

Were you thinking of Eugene Rousseau :) - or also referred to as François-Eugène Rousseau?

Hi flyingfree. I found it again..finally..Auguste Jean..I thought there was a female sounding name in there somewhere, lol. I was trying to find examples of this style of Japanese baskets but haven't been able to find any.

was in midst of something else and couldn't think of his name.  Which is a bit concerning given the amount of research I have done on him.  Hey ho, brain engaged elsewhere at mo.

Hi flying free. To be able to tell it was French from that one photo I thought was incredibly impressive!! Would you know where I can find Japanese baskets that the vase is said to be in the style of? All Ive found, that are definitely Japanese, are of a completely different style.
