VEB Sachsenglas Bombay versus Sherdley Nordic - similar!
« on: September 04, 2008, 11:25:14 PM »
Spotted on Pamela's VEB Sachsenglas 1965 catalogue is this design, called Bombay.

Compare this to the British-made pattern Nordic by Sherdley Glass shown here:

Oo-er!  That does look a bit naughty.
And going by the pattern number, it must have been launched a good while after AHW's design for Sherdley.

The Sherdley one dates from before 1950-ish as it's shown in Angus-Butterworth published then.

There are differences, notably in the definition of the handles so you're unlikely to mix them up. The GDR designers did weird things. I have spotted a Candlewick dish in the Lausitz book with which an east German designer won the good design competition in the early eighties!

No, I certainly wouldn't mix them up, but it's still a bit naughty.

And, isn't Candlewick a rip-off of Schrotter's Bull/Boule for Inwald (or one of the neighbours)?
Or was it made under license in the States, do you know?

Cheers,
Chris

That is a chicken and egg discussion I would not want to get involved in...

Schrötter allegedly designed Bull for the wife of H. Markhbeinn, the Parisian importer. It pre-dates Candlewick, and it is thought that the design was ripped off, and made in the U.S. by, I think, Imperial??

Marcus

I have the book Candlewick, The Jewel of Imperial and it says it started in the fall of 1936.  When I saw Boule I wondered too which one was first!

Fascinating, Anne - well spotted.

The earliest advert I've seen for Sherdley Nordic is 1948. I've also seen it in Ravenhead packaging - ie post-1964, so clearly a popular design.

Can anyone tell me anything more about VEB Sachsenglas Ottendorf? I'm afraid all the web sources seem to be in German.
