Lovely engraved glass origin and age if possible please
« on: October 05, 2008, 02:12:51 PM »
I think this is the nicest thing I bought yesterday. The glass is 2.5" or 6.5cms tall and appears like vertically optical ribbed. The engaving is lovely a bird and flowers as you can see and a butterfly on the other side. The bottom has a nicely polished pontil like Whitefriars and a flower engraved on the pontil. The glass is quite thin.

Pretty engraving!  It would be nice to see the butterfly - could you post a photo of that?  They seem to be easier elements to match or compare with other engravings than birds are.  Did you use the macro setting on your camera?  It looks like it wants to focus on the farther side.

I did use the macro but got a new mega pixel camera and I'm struggling with it. I trried the butterfly but it got lost in the photo I'll try again. If I put black card inside the glass will it help to show the design. I'm useless with a camera and patterened glass.

Pat, putting a sheet of dark card inside is a good idea.

You might also try taking it from further back, and cropping out the part you don't want.  Sometimes it's easier to focus that way and you end up with less distortion.  Putting a dark card in will help, just make sure it's on the far side of the inside of the tumbler so that light can get behind the cutting.  It makes gray cuttings much easier to see.

I've been experimenting with putting water into an engraved glass to take a photo of it.  I've had some good results.

Good pictures!
I've seen similar things from Tiroler Glashütte Kramsach, also on incredibly light blanks.

Yes, the photos came out well this time!  Thanks for posting them.

Austria hadn't occurred to me either; there's just so much to learn!  Your butterfly does look sort of familiar, but maybe it's my imagination.
