Blue Glass Bottle marked K C B 1831
« on: July 06, 2009, 02:46:25 AM »
Hi everyone!  I have tried to search past topics for info but am not having any luck.  I have this very old looking blue glass bottle marked K C B 1831 on the bottom.  Any clues where to look?  I will post pics in a bit.
Thnx!
Kathy

Kathy, you might find the links for bottles here of use: http://glasslinks.yobunny.org.uk/articles.php?lng=en&pg=15 to find a match for the base marks...

Anne,
Thnx ~ I tried to look through those marks but couldn't find anything similar.  Pics will be posted now.  I have several pieces that I got at auction that were from a "Belgium container" most are unmarked and I will be posting them to see if they may have just got thrown onto the mix.  Thnx for your help!

Kathy & Anne — Your ornamental font KB is Kilner Bros, huge bottle makers, see here.   I believe that the C indicates their Conisbrough works.

1831 is a pattern number, not a date.

Kathy — I am intrigued by the central indentation on the base.   This looks as if it was a locator for fitting the bottle to a lathe, possibly for finishing the rim.   Can anyone explain this?

More likely for locating in a filling machine, often found on the rim of base.

That's interesting, thanks Bernard. My one and only Kilner jar doesn't have that type of marking so I'd not have guessed them.

More likely for locating in a filling machine, often found on the rim of base.

Frank — those base rim indentations (or protrusions) are for the labelling machine — to enable it to locate the label precisely on the front of the bottle, or, for plain bottles, to locate the label tidily exactly halfway between the side seams.   Labels that are positioned over seams are much more liable to damage.   If you have no base rim locator you probably don't have a front or seams, like a modern wine bottle.

Bernard,
Would this bottle date to 1863/1873 when it was Kilner Bros?  Thnx for all of your help!

Kathy — Unless you've found another source, the link I provided only dates your bottle to 1863–1937, a rather large three-quarters of a century.

You might get a narrower date range if someone knows when the ornamental font on your bottle was used by Kilner Bros.   Try the curator of the Elsecar Bottle Museum - http://coddswallop.org/contactat/

... and notice the correct way of spelling coddswallop.   Our dictionaries are a century out of date on this one.

Please let us know if you discover more.
