"Bristol" blue spirit decanter - info pls?
« on: October 28, 2009, 03:37:12 PM »
Hi all,

Didn't intend listing these, as was quite happy to gleam info from the auction sale cat from where they were bought-but don't want to mislead anyone claiming they are something they might not be, (see the liquer glasses post)

Sale cat states- "a late victorian "Bristol " blue glass spirit decanter and stopper and six tot glasses"

I understand the word "Bristol blue" has been overtly overused. I would prefer to list as "colbalt blue".  Would the decoration have been silver overlay.  I have seen a few of these on Ebay recently, and the end sale figure varies greatly.  Were these fairly common in their day, or tourist pieces on the grand tour- all seem to have a venice inspired theme?

All comments and info always welcome, thanks Sharron

These are Venetian and bear no relation at all to Bristol. The decoration is silver which is galvanic deposit. You can buff it up, but with care because it is very thin. Think 1950s for this set.

Thanks Ivo,

As with the other post, I am taking on board all comments.  I am so disappointed with the outcome of both purchases.  You think you are buying from a creditable source at auction? oh well, you live and learn.

Thankyou.  :-[
