2 paperweights, signed or just defaced? Help needed please.
« on: April 24, 2010, 10:07:41 PM »

I have here two paperweights, both of which have writing scratched into the base, the first one, with mottled effect has the date, 1974  and then seems to say, Thornyer, or something like that.    The second one which I haven't managed to get a good picture of, will try again, is marked, LH88 then there is more scratched writing looking like , to someone, from someone.   Any information as to makers appreciated, thanksX

We need better photos to make out the details. Try using the camera's "macro" function together withg the zoom control (if there is one).

The signatiure on the first weight might be "Thorneycroft" - but there is very little information on this maker. Just three previous threads, one pointing to the initial two, which mention labels and signature "a J T":

Thanks Kevin, unfortunately, when I use the good camera with the zoom, the pics always seem to large to upload even on small setting, probably need to go back to the instruction, I will have another go though, the Thorneycroft iidea sounds interesting, cheers, Gill

Use your good camera with the macro and zoom and at full resolution, then resize. I use a 9 mega pixel camera at full resolution and then resize so that the longest dimension is about 700 pixel; that seems to work for attaching here. Hurrah, Hurrah, Hurrah!   finally managed to upload a picture from the decent camera, thanks for taking the time to help with this   :hiclp:   I think these pictures of the marks are a bit better, it can be seen better in the flesh but the first part of the name on the mottled one now looking very much like, "al" to me.   Also, Middlesex University only about 15 minutes round the M25 from where I live and bought it, so in the right neck of the woods.
