Big red and little orange. Czech? 1930s vases
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:09:43 PM »
I've had the orange one a while now. The red one is a recent purchase. Both have the same construction technique: clear lined with colour and with uranium custard glass trim. I say lined because in places the coloured layer has missing spots. Both are mould blown with no pontil mark, though they have obviously been hot finished. I assume the manufacturing technique is similar to that for partial lining; blow a thin coloured bubble into a clear bubble.

Does anyone else think 1930s Czech or have any idea when or where they were made? I have only ever seen these.

The orange one is 10.5 cm tall and the red one 20.5 cm.

Hi, I have been asked about a similar before. I am attaching a couple of other images. Struck me as possibly Bohemian, and also possibly German (just a gut reaction really), based on the color of the example I had seen.  This one has a pontil and does not seem to have a clear outer casing though.... sure looks like the same house, maybe earlier production.....  I had not seen similar shape details until these images were sent to me.....

I have seen the style of applique on the red one before though... Can not think of where at the moment.... Will post it if I come up with it....

And here are the relatives, as seen on "The Trip to Prague".

So Czech; Dirk thinks Loetz. Can Jindrich or Pamela confirm or deny please

I can confirm not Loetz.....  other than that I am still undecided as to house although I now believe they are Czech.  At least one piece in that image is a Kralik piece....  the tall dark piece to the right, and also very possibly the tall orange piece to the left of it with what appears to be iridescent claw appliques on it and the ruffled rim.

Is that ESP?  ;) I was looking at this last night and Dirk's photographs - on one of the photos there is some information about tango glass makers - I found it quite hard to make it out but I think the names mentioned in conjunction with Tango glass were Franz Welz (Hrob a Teplic), Otto Lowy and Ernst Steinwald (Teplice), then Franz Tomschick (Kostvany?)- I hope I've spelt all those correctly.
I can't read it properly - I'll have another look and correct any typos.

if uranium glass was used and was expensive to obtain at that time, then would that preclude any smaller makers?

I don't think so. Colorants never were particularly cheap.
