Mdina 3 sided vase query?
« on: February 28, 2011, 12:26:42 PM »
Whilst browsing at the weekend spotted a vase described as a rare Mdina perfume bottle.
Looked more like a vase to me around 5" high quite chunky with a tiny hole in the rim with a fine clear stopper.
Tricorn shape with 3 polished faceted sides in what I would describe as 'Earthtone' pattern.
The price reflected it's 'rarity' so I didn't even take it out of the cabinet.
I have looked through the couple of books I have and can find nothing similar, so could it in fact be as the seller says a 'rare'
piece though in my opinion maybe not a perfume bottle?
Chris :ooh:

I know the things you mean - I wouldn't say rare - (I never do anyway) - not even scarce - although they're not that common either.
They are perfume bottles, very thick things which tend to overbalance sometimes. I've seen them in the blue with the yellowy streaky bits too. I think they're from around the '80s.
I'm not overly fond of them - they look too much like pws and I try to avoid both perfume bottles and pws.

I had a "strange" one of these for years before I realised it wasn't a pw, but a pb with the stopper stuck inside - so firmly stuck that somebody had ground the top of it off, just leaving the leftover bit stuck in the neck. :ho:

Thanks Sue, the same seller who I got the 'rare' pestle and mortar from Lol

So I was wary of his 'rare perfume bottle' attribution. seems he was correct then this time.
Though at £78 I wasn't in the least bit tempted just a little curious.
Chris

Your pestle is a bowl - a very, very nice early piece. The mortar is a stopper from a decanter.
Not any sort of marriage - not even one of convienience!

The triangular faceted perfume bottle is not rare.

The bowl is not rare, it might be scarce-ish. I don't think these pieces are properly appreciated yet.

The stopper needs a decanter to sit in.

Chris - just avoid all sellers who use the R-word!  :smg:

Shouldn't that be the other way around? The mortar is the bowl, the pestle the stopper...  ;)
