Two-coloured heavy candlesticks: Czech?
« on: June 23, 2011, 07:47:03 PM »
I found these candlesticks in Vancouver. They have the Belfor label on them, a company which in the 50's 60's imported into Canada a great deal of Czech glass, but not exclusively Czech glass. I think the candlesticks ought to be Skrdlovice (and I believe Robert and Jindrich agree with me), but so far, we haven't been able to pin done anything definite. Does anybody recognize them? 20.3 cm tall and each one one weighs a whopping 1.07 kg.

Thanks for looking and all suggestion gratefully received.

Great pieces David, they almost must be Czech given the amount of 60's CZ glass that Belfor imported-exported then.... and they are great quality looking pieces. If they cannot be identified as Skrdlovice patterns maybe Karlovarske Sklo-Mstisov may be responsible, I know there are lines we have very little information about.... very curious (and very nice) candlesticks indeed!

Robert:

Thanks for the suggestion about Karlovarske Sklo. I'll drop Moser a line and see.  The colours are the same as the colours in a Skrdlovice candlestick I have, although a little diluted.

Thanks for compliment, Craig. A friend pointed them out to me at a flea market and I had to work hard not to just open my wallet and give the seller the absurd price he was initially asking.

Veronika from Moser replied and it's not Moser or Karlovarske Sklo, so the hunt goes on.

Hi David:
Just a note -- weren't we finding that whenever we sent a note to Moser before, we would all get the same answer  (Nope).  I know we were discussing this somewhere before that is seemed everyone was just getting a NOPE from them.  See if I can find those threads here....  :X:

So not sure if that Nope should really count ---- Yet ..... :huh2:  :ho:

Rose:

Thanks for the encouragement. I think Jindrich suggested that we take Moser's word with some caution. They don't always say nope, as they said the other piece (a heavy vase with two applied lenses) that I asked about was by Karlovarske Sklo between 1967 and 1985. I think it's more of a problem when the piece is part of the production that was moved from Mstisov to Karlovarske Sklo.  I had a 'Pizzicato' piece with a Moser label on it that they denied knowing anything about.

they aren't by Jan Gabrhel are they?
Something triggered that thought - I don't know what though and I haven't had a look through the CGReviews (60's and 70's I recall) again to check, but I remember looking for some Frantisek Koudelka pieces and noticing his pieces...so it could just be that.
May be worth a look?

Interesting idea.  I got stuck on Skrdlovice (the shape of the candle holder, the general feel), then thought maybe Karolvarske Sklo, and then Chribska, none of which have panned out. I looked at the link you provided and there are somewhat similar pieces by both Koudelka and Gabrhel, similar enough for me to look through CGR again.

Thanks!
