Opinions please - is this a crack?
« on: August 07, 2011, 01:54:13 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm hoping you can help me with a bit of a dispute I'm having with an ebay seller over a Pavel Hlava vase I purchased.  I hope it's ok to post here, but no problem if it needs to be moved to the cafe section.

I have the sellers permission to post this here along with the pictures.  The vase was described as "no chips or cracks" but when I received it, it appears to have a large crack right the way through it.  When compared to the gallery image in the listing, the position of the crack matches perfectly with a dark line in the gallery image, which I originally assumed was a reflection.

The seller has since sent me a high res image of the vase taken before it was posted, and the line/crack can clearly be seen.  Basically, the dispute is that I am convinced it is a crack, while the seller is convinced it is "part of the structure".  I suggested we settle this by posting here and going with the majority vote and the seller agreed, so I would appreciate as many opinions as possible either way please.

Ebay listing: 150628333997

Theese are pics that I have taken:

This one is the sellers image which I have permission to post here, taken before it was posted:

Lastly, a pic to compare the sellers image with one of mine:

Thanks everyone for your time.  :kissy:

One way to tell for sure is to give it a light ding with a fingernail - if it "rings" it's not cracked, if it goes into a dull thuddy end, it is.

It does look suspiciously like a crack from the photos, but I wouldn't like to say yay or nay.

If you turn it around in the light, a crack will show up as a bright, reflecting edge inside the walls of the piece.

It's really easy to tell when you've got it in your mitts!

I would say it is a crack from the images. The fissure in the glass reflects light differently, which in my opinion can only occur if it is a defined surface within the glass, indicating a crack to me......  The line also appears to run in a different "grain" than the work done on the glass..... to me another indication that it is not supposed to be there.....

Cracked I'd say.

Have you tried a photo inside-out against the light, Wayne? As Sue said, also I think it would become even more obvious, as the vase is smooth inside and no reflexions from the pattern occurring.

IMHO, I would call it a Fracture (as it might not be all the way though) as compared to a crack you can feel with your finger-nail.

I would say (IMHO) that it is NOT part of the structure.......it is a damaged item.

IMHO -- that ?? part of the structure (cracked, Fracture) was NOT listed in the Ad -- When it is stated "No Chips, No cracks".

I would vote for you Wayne, IMHO -- as it is clearly there and damaged.

This is MY Opinion!

I think it is an internal fracture or stress crack.  I have a tall one of these vases.  They are so thick and heavy that they don't have a 'ring' (mine is in perfect condition and still doesn't ring).

maybe some people do not want to give a *verbal opinion* -- is there anyway to make a post here for *a Voting Poll* so we can click the poll, if someone just wishes to remain anonymous ?

Just a thought ??

Does look out of character with the rest of the vase, difficult to say definitively without handling, although does look like some kind of internal fracture.

Just seen Rose's comments while posting, sounds like a good idea and easier to keep track of results....

A fault and most certainly NOT part of the structure.
