Interesting Mdina Pulled Ear Vase - Size and Colour
« on: August 08, 2011, 12:25:21 PM »
Hi,

Came across this earlier today, more than I wanted to pay, however, was drawn in by the colour and presence of silver chloride. The colours look very early in date, would be interested to hear your thoughts..?

The person in shop mentioned that there may have been a stopper as it was sold with another piece of Mdina the day before. Not sure if that's correct, as this looks like a small Pulled Ear Vase to me..? Also weren't stoppers usually optional to purchasers when orginally purchasing..?

The other interesting point is the size, it measures approx 5 inches tall, which seems a fair bit smaller than most I have seen, both late and early.?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Greg

Pulled-ear vases didn't have stoppers. This looks like a really nice one - loads going on and lots of iridesence. I'd say earlier rather than later.

Thanks Sue, much appreciated.

I found the size interesting just under 5 inches, one of the smallest examples in this shape I have encountered. In many ways makes it more appealing.

The very early ones tend to have rounded shoulders, not wide and flat, and are often smaller and narrower.
And the smallness makes it look busier. Iridesence plus lots going on is very desirable.

Lovely example.
The small ones are nice, the later and usually larger versions tend to be a bit bland by comparison.
