ok, here is another mystery (for me anyway).

My guess is that it is venitian but I really have no idea.

It's crystal (has a good ring when flicked).

It's big = 11 inches tall

It's 730g

I don't know how to describe the methods of work that have gone into making it but:
base looks like those on a blown glass: ie ridges etc.
the stem is twisted (whilst hot?)
the bowl is raised on the inside (like little lenses) rather than depressed or dimpled.
the top edge is a series of little crests.

Any help with ID, age, origin, etc. Idea of value would be nice but not that important as I bought it already!

Most likely a piece of Empoli. It may have had a lid at one time, with a finial in which the foot design returned. 1970s i think.

I don't see anything like it on google image search for Empoli.

I think the lid is unlikely as the top edge is peaked.

My first instinctive thought was Empoli as well (not that I'd know anywhere near as much as Ivo ;D )

well, if it is Empoli I'll be very happy. I know it's quality ... I know it's odd looking! Nothing else.

I doubt that this piece is crystal, but it's a nice big piece although it's not terribly valuable imho.  If you try our Search facility here for Empoli, you'll find pages and pages of results.  Might be something useful there.

Can you tell me how to search the site, I tried putting empoli in the search box and it came back with no results. What did I do wrong?

I use the little blue tab that appears between rules and profile above this box you can type in or above the threads list.
That way you can tailor your searches.  If you use the search box that is on the right hand side at the top of the screen I find it only searches in the board I am in rather than the whole of the site.

I doubt that this piece is crystal, ...

It certainly has the 'right ring' to it.

Maybe I should ask a new question thread ... how to test for crystal?
