cased glass glowing orange.
« on: August 27, 2011, 08:50:34 PM »
this martini glass in is cheaply made in china by the Shanxi Xc Glassware Co.

it's pretty nice cased glass but it's the unusual (?) effect under light that interests me most. Forgive me if I am getting over excited, I don't have much cased glass so I don;t know if this is usual.

It has a glow under halogen lights. I've tried to capture it but none of the pics capture the effect as seen by the eye.

Can anyone explain how or why it happens? Is there a chemical/oxide/ore etc. in the glass to cause this glow.

As you say, the pics do not show the effect too well. But the orange glow could be a standard reaction of much opal (white) glass when viewed with background sunlight or room lighting. Some folk call it "fire"!

or could it be something in the yellow casing causing it to glow orange?
I can't remember which one and I'm bound to get it wrong but maybe cadmium?

the second picture down shows how it looks in natural light - but it's actually with flash photography.

the first photo has some kind of glow going on in reaction to the flash

the bottom 2 are flash off in a display cabinet lit with halogen spots. The 3rd from the top is dierectly under the spot and the bottom is pulled forward slightly.
