Murano-like Fish Sculpture
« on: September 20, 2011, 07:23:39 PM »
This is a pretty fish sculpture that looks a lot like Murano. The base of it is not finished. The pontil scar and tips of the outer base lobes are ground to set flat, but not polished. The pedestal itself is rather chunky -- heavier than the vintage Venetian glass. Do you think it is contemporary Murano glass or something else? It is 10" (25.4 cm) tall. I saw one like it on eBay advertised as Murano glass, but there was no label on that one either.

I have no idea, of course......but it is pretty.

IMHO the base looks like a older style of work, while the fish look a bit newer.  I do NOT mean a marriage of glass, ......I just mean like Old School glass meets new school glass ........ in my eyes, but then I wear *glasses* lol  8)    :24:

I think I am just thinking the same way as Anita.....Unknown     lol

Please don't tell me that the Chinese are starting to use aventurine in their 'Murano style' glass now.  I just don't like the look of those fish.  :help:  I do hope someone recognises them as something else.   :X:

The metal on the inside of the base is gold. I've seen gold used in Mexico, South America, and China, though, so it doesn't tell us a lot. The ground tips around the rim only show up in a couple of the tips, but each one is ground. The glass of the base that isn't ground has a wavy type look -- a look I don't want to see on glass figures. The white on the fish has a flocculent appearance. I don't know how it was done. I'm hoping it isn't Chinese, but I haven't been able to scratch that off the list of possibilities yet.

I have found several more fish that I know are by the same maker. The fish on this type base are all very pretty to look at. The fish themselves have excellent workmanship. The base is just lacking the final touches. None of the fish had labels. Most peculiar that out of so many not even one had a label.

It doesn't look Chinese to me. It looks a little more "together" and subtle.
