Hi,

Can anyone help identify this old rather large (and dusty) jar.  It has Rd 574984 on the bottom.

Thanks, Sarah  :)

Rd 574984 is a registered design number assigned to Weiss & Biheller Ltd on 12 December 1910 [source: The Glass Association:  Registration Numbers 1908-1945 (known as the Blue Book)].

The DICTIONARY OF GLASS MARKS gives a mark for Weiss & Biheller as a hammer - see here: http://www.heartland-discoveries.com/glassmisc.htm (item 29).

There is a firm called Weiss & Biheller listed in New York as a lighting manufacturer - chandeliers etc.- I don't know if this is the same firm who now only do lighting -see http://listings.allpages.com/ny-0002049425-new-york.html

London based glassworks producing household & utility glassware. (Hartmann)

From companies house:

WEISS & BIHELLER (METALS) LIMITED
PARKVILLE HOUSE
BRIDGE STREET
PINNER
MIDDLESEX HA5 3JN
Company No. 00275994

from 1933-2004. Could be a connection as the name is uncommon. Nothing in the 1931 trade directory. It could also be that they emigrated to the US and concentrated on lighting

A high probability that this item was manufactured by Carl Stoelzle und Sohn, A.G. given that Weiss & Biheller Ltd were principal London agents for Stoelzle, at that time.

This thread is a fine example of what is so special about this board. Two years on and people are still adding to the knowledge base. Nice one Marcus! ;)
