I have seen the threading both ways.  I think it is just hit and miss and really does not relate to if a piece is cut down or not.  Edge finish to me is going to be the biggest indicator unless I recognize the piece as part of a different form.

Been looking at my pieces again and what Craig said matches with these pic's,the green one,cut and polished with no veins but the overshot piece has intruding veins,just my long winded way of saying I'm wrong,probably , about your piece being cut down
