Big blue striped bowl
« on: April 22, 2006, 10:52:38 PM »
Does anyone know who made this or where it's from, please?

The base is ground flat and the bowl is quite thick and heavy. The rim is blue and the bowl measures 11.75 inches diameter.

Thanks.  :)

Hi, thank you, I think it might be fairly recent as you say. :)

I'm not sure if the base has been applied seperately or not.

Base looks applied to me, the expense of grinding and polishing does not fit with cheap production. I am assuming the base is clear glass?

Yes, the base is clear glass. If the base was applied it must have been done quite well as I cannot see the join. The base appears to be slightly frosted but I don't know if that is because of ware or not. I always assumed that a frosted base mean't that it was ground and not polished? Does the rippling effect seen in my first picture not indicate cheap glass?

Ripple effect could be deliberate or it could just be that blower was not fully skilled. Frostiness can be a result of grinding but if very smooth not neccesarily cheap and quick. Or is could be done by acid. Need bigger pictures to see more.

Thank you, Peter and Frank.

There are some similarities, the stripey star in the centre and some of the colours used in the other items. I'm not sure if it's the same company though, but, thank you if it is and thank you if it isn't.  :D

As for the base it feels smooth-ish to the touch.

It's probably not but it looks as though there's a star in the centre

Thinking aloud:
I first suspected Josefina as they do stripes starting from the centre along with other Krosno glass makers. Second, I thought perhaps Murano as they do (I think) large wavy bowls like this and the foot is applied. The decoration isn't typical of Murano though.

I think the large bubble in the centre is a little bit worrying. And the glass is tangy rather than tingy when tapped with a finger nail.

The ting and tang of glass, whatever next.
