Selkirk limited edition - Penguin
« on: March 27, 2013, 01:13:50 PM »
Hi there,

The Selkirk weight below which was sold on Ebay recently is the Penguin limited edition by Peter Holmes (note that it is n. 27/75, has a PH cane and was issued in 1983):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221201949835?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

However, I own a limited edition weight very similar to this one which carries the same number (27/75), has a PH cane and was issued in 1985 (see pictures attached). Unless there was a mistake in the numbering when issued (which is possible), my weight must belong to another limited edition. In fact, my weight has an additional animal (orca?) facing the penguin which the one on Ebay does not seem to have. Can anyone shed any light on this? Did Selkirk issue two limited editions with a penguin? Does anyone have another Selkirk penguin weight to compare?

I wish to clarify this as I forwarded my images to Wolf and Frank for Scotland glass and I would like to be as accurate as possible...

The orca is the killer whale - so it's not an orca - it's the wrong colour.  :)

Hi,

Ian - Thanks for that. That's clarified things a bit. It would seem that Selkirk issued two limited editions with a penguin. There must have been a demand for it even after the original edition was finished and so they produced a second. I will ask Peter Holmes when I see him in June.

Sue - I thought Orca because they hunt penguins. But you are right, the colour is wrong and that 'animal' looks too friendly to be a killer whale... What else could it be? A dolphin?

Hi

I agree - probably a leopard seal after its supper, given that they eat penguins.  So don't be fooled by the friendly expression on its face. :D

Hi,

Yes, I concede that a seal is more likely but if it is a leopard seal where are the spots? ;)

They're not all spotted all over.
We used to have some sea leopard skins, they were used for sunbathing on in the back garden when I was a child.

Do you have a certificate with yours, Sophie - and - if yes - does it also say "Penguin" or something like "Penguin and Seal"?

I have never seen a second penguin issue in any catalogue. The image in the 1983 doesn't show a seal (or whatever) - and the weight is not shown in the 84 or 85 catalogues - quite common for low number LE weights, even if they still had not been sold out by then.

Hi Wolf,

No, I do not have a certificate and the name is not inscribed on the underside. It may be that my penguin limited edition was for a specific dealer or shop. I know for instance that Selkirk did limited editions for Yelverton and many paperweight makers have done limited editions for Selman.

I will ask Peter Holmes as I will see him at the PCC Ysart week end. If you wish the information sooner, I am happy to email him.
