possible Maltese mushroom
« on: May 29, 2013, 01:53:28 PM »
Not my area, but occasionally I can't resist the odd one if it's attractive (I think this is more colourful than the Wedgwood fugi).

This is unmarked, but in view of the shape of the marved splodges I'm tempted to go for Mtarfa - but then worndered if it might be IOW Meadow Garden range - I understand some of those were unmarked.              Unusually thick clear casing - almost a centimetre in places, and about 3.75" tall.

Thanks for looking :)

Absolutely NOT IoWSG, they're far more delicate. It might be Mdina, but I can't swear to it. I would normally consider Gozo (or Wedgwood) for a big mushroom with a clear casing that extends beyond the colours in this way - but this seems to be a smaller one and is not typical Gozo colours. I'd say Mdina, was most likely, if pushed for an answer.
I do have a Gozo mushroom - the top is much flatter.
It has to be said I'm a bit random with the origins of my glass mushrooms.
(But I'm highly specific about the kind I eat!)

thanks Sue. :)         I do see the Wedgwood ones on my travels, and I do have a couple - plus I have Susan Tobin's book - and must admit this one doesn't look  like a Wedgwood example, but who knows.............?
I plumped for Mtarfa in view of what I thought was their marvered splodges, but since I'm sure you know light years more than me with the Maltese colourways, then your suggestion of Mdina may well be correct.

I only have one mtarfa mushroom - and it does have the clear casing - but it's not a multicoloured splodgy thing - it's blue at the bottom and has been rolled in powdered yellow enamel on the top part, with a few brownish splodges.
It does have the thick solid curvy bottom part yours does - but the top of the cap is pointy. I'm not personally familiar with any splodgy Mtarfa mushrooms. I would say Mtarfa is a possibility too.

I just like random mushrooms plonked in some of the unavoidable "void" spaces on my shelves. ;D
