Salviati trees, bowl and flowers?
« on: August 07, 2013, 11:41:55 PM »
This bunch arrived in an auction lot with a few other bits of glass. The trees I assumed were from Salviati but since I have cleaned the rest I think the bowl and the flowers may be too. Do all these items belong together? Perhaps the flowers were meant to be displayed in the bowl.

There are 4 flowers, each is about 10cm long, the trees are around 18cm tall.

The salver is called a "Cardinal's hat" and I have an aventurine copy with an Italia signature which is attributed to Cappelin Venini.  I know the hat is a well known shape and was made by many manufacturers - so Salviati could well have dunnit in gold foil. The orange trees I have never seen - the flowers look familiar. Great set, altogether.

Thanks Ivo, it is a lovely set and I am relieved it is still together, especially as I might well have split it up.

Last week I was flicking through a friends copy of the book Venetian Glass in the 1890s: Salviati at Stanford University by Carol M Osbourne, that is where I saw a photo of one of these trees. I will take another look at that book and check that they really do match. Both the yellow and green colours are achieved with frit (pulveri) on clear glass and it all matches, which is one of the reasons I am confident they belong together. The orange glass matches nicely too.

This is lovely, John! -- A miracle that it has survived such a long time...

Not bad, bearing in mind that it is so much older than you ;D

Exactly! ;D

Confession time... These trees are not illustrated in the book I mentioned earlier, no idea where I got that from. The only explanation that seems to make sense is that I dreamt seeing one in the book. Oh dear. :-X

I came across this old listing.
Not as beautiful as it doesn't have the gold, but perhaps that was where you remembered seeing the attribution?
