Davidson Pearline Gondola Shaped vase
« on: November 02, 2013, 06:56:46 PM »
When I bought this it was sold as Davidson. I could not ever remember seeing another one in pearline before .

I was not sure about it being Davidson and thought it may have been Greener.
I have sine been told by a friend that it is extremely rare and Davidson possibly a Heppell mould and almost certainly not Greener.

The vase is not marked.

The vase measures 9" in length or 23cm.

Is there any firm evidence for a Davidson attribution for this piece, Roy  – catalogues,  marked examples, etc. ?

Does anyone have a marked example of this pattern to confirm its attribution, please?

Such much of this blue opalescent glass is automatically presumed to be by Davidson when often it is known to be attributed to another manufacturer. (I prefer to reserve the term pearline just to attributable Davidson pieces).

I can certainly see why your first impression of this vase was that it was by Greener.  The cordate /heart-shaped foliate decoration to the sides is not dissimilar to that of the Greener & Co. RD 217749 (registered 10 April 1893), though I have only seen clear flint glass examples in the pattern, and there are plenty of marked Greener & Co. pieces known in both blue and yellow opalescent glass.

Hi Fred

I agree with my first thought that the item is a Greener piece and not Davidson. I do not know of any marked ones.

Some photos of an example in yellow-green [non-opalescent] uranium glass. (Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by Kevin Collins).

The colour of the glass is a somewhat insipid yellow-green, very similar to the colour of uranium glass known to have been used by Greener in some of their registered designs from the early 1890s – and the blue opalescent glass of Roy’s example is also similar to that used by Greener in their registered designs at about the same time.

I think this has appeared on GMB before.  I have a pair and have always known them as Greener.   If I can remember correctly they appear in'Standard Encycpedia of Opalescent Glass' named as "Viking".

Thank you, Margaret.

Does anyone have this pattern to show in other colours, please?
