Sowerby pattern 1874 plate, RDs 42947 and 44659, 1886.
« on: November 06, 2013, 07:55:45 PM »
A Sowerby pressed flint glass plate, 5¾  inches in diameter. Registered design numbers  42947 & 44659 embossed in the centre together with the Sowerby peacock trade mark.

(Permission for the re-use of this image on the GMB granted by runningstitch).

RD 44659 of 11 March 1886 is the registered design number for the shape of the dish, and RD 42947 of 10 February 1886 is for the decorative pattern on the dish.

The plate is part of Sowerby’s pattern 1874 service (which is comprised of at least 10 differently-shaped items, some of them additionally offered in several sizes). Although the design was registered in 1886, the set was still shown on page 3 of their pattern book catalogue XV of 1895.

The plate is unusual in that it has the two RD numbers – other pieces I have seen from the 1874 service only carry the RD 42947 number.

Does anyone have any other Sowerby items that are marked with multiple RD numbers?

Fred.
