Large glass ashtray. Murano?
« on: November 21, 2013, 02:56:53 PM »
Been off this board for a long while but need help please. The picture shows a 5 3/4 diameter, 2 1/2" high, 1.4kg amber/brown ashtray. The base is flat and the sides have 12 equispaced ribs. The main colour is encased in clear glass and the bubbles are attached to the body colour only; not suspended in the clear glass.

This came with a large batch of Whitefriars glass from a local auction house.

It will not be kept but I would like correct identification so that it can go to the right collector.

Any help appreciated. Many thanks

It was not made by Whitefriars, their production is well documented.

It could be Italian, it could be German, many glassworks made similar so it is a difficult object to positively ID.

Totally agree not Whitefriars: -

Colour is wrong
Air bubbles are wrongly placed
Would expect to see a pontil on this design

I have many Whitefriars pieces and as soon as I saw this in the auction lot I knew that it couldn't be Whitefriars.
Still, a handsome piece that deserves recognition.

So, any more thoughts please?
