Cobalt blue bottle vase, silver chloride surface decoration
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:52:47 AM »
This was an erroneous purchase (crappy pic), I had the vague hope that it is Mdina.
Which it is certainly not ;D

But what is it?

Stands 22 cm tall, cobalt blue, slightly mottled glass with silver chloride surface decoration.
Stand ring ground but not polished.

Any help highly appreciated as usual!

Thanks,
Michael

Could be Tadeusz Wresniak? Only ever saw this type of decoration on clear glass but why not on cobalt?

Thanks a lot, Ivo!
Well possible...
Do you think the vase is Polish, too (by another company), and then surface-decorated by Wresniak?

BTW, >> Link

The only other piece I found with a very similar decoration is >> this Suhajek piece, but the wonky shape and the base finish of mine rules that out...

There is tin on the surface too. That's the dull grey spots.
Feliks Nawrocki made several cobalt pieces with silver chloride and tin decoration, circa '65. I've seen (and lusted after) them in the Museum in Wroclaw, and have checked the images, name and date in the book from the museum.

There is a clear cased piece as well as simply surface decorated.

Thank you Sue! Especially for checking the book :)

So do you think this is actually a piece by Feliks Nawrocki? - Or rather from another Polish factory, just in a similar vein?
Googling the name didn't come up with anything...

I haven't a clue! I simply fell madly in love with his work in the Museum. I did take pics, but they came out very dark and there is nothing I can do to bring them up, I can't operate anything more than brightness and contrast.
There are pics in the book, but they were taken with flash, and don't look right either - so I can't even photograph the book for you.

I've taken my best pic and fiddled with it a bit. These two pieces date to '65. I believe that individual artists were able to "play around" with the hot metal in glassworks there in the '60s and were coming up with their own take on "Studio Glass". Fascinating information and we need to know so much more about it all!

It's just the use of cobalt blue, cased in clear and the use of silver chloride and tin. All features his work and your piece have in common.

We don't know nearly enough about Polish glass artists! We don't know their names, we don't know their work or their history. But there is a wealth of beauty to be discovered.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thanks again.
You are surely right, Polish glass is still a great unknown, seems that not much has been published.
I have seen but a few images of some really gorgeous Polish glass.

The Museum in Wroclaw really is well worth a visit.
We spent 2 days in it. And I want to go back for more. :)

In painting and classical music too, there is so much wonderful Polish work, the like of which I have never seen before. Particularly in the realms of 20th century art, my favourite period.
Poland is my favourite holiday destination. I like to be a culture-vulture from morning to night on holiday; Poland has so much to offer and to be discovered.

The book I have is quite a big thick volume, full of wonderful images. It covers the glass and pottery of the 20th Century that is kept in the Museum. It has no ISBN, it was published by the museum in '04, and is available in their shop. It's in Polish, so I don't understand a word of it, but can work out which piece is by whom and it's date.

You should see it in reality!
I think I might have found some pages from the book I have on the web.
It's called Ceramika szkło polskie. I just googled that, and this is one of the first links that comes up. I'll carry on and see if I can find a copy...
