It's a reasonably early bit of Mdina Earthtones, maybe mid-late'70s.
Well spotted!

The signature is a forgery, obviously. It's not even a very good one.  ::) It's far too big and almost legible!

I've written to the seller to tell them.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Hi collard123, welcome to the Board.

I guess your comment about "getting an etching pen for Christmas" was intended to be tongue in cheek. But it could be seen as a direct statement that you believe the seller was responsible for adding a false signature.

The board policy on posts relating to sales items that may not be as described includes: Do not state anything is a fact, unless you can provide documentary proof! And also "If it is felt that a posting is taking an unfair position in respect of a person selling on an on-line auction the posting will be removed or edited to remove bias."

The seller told me it came from a house clearance and the lady whose house it was, told her that it had been made by a relative.

Maybe the relative had a dremel?
A whole load of folk could have had a dremmeling wotsit on it, before the seller got hold of it.  ;D

There is absolutely no way of knowing how the marks got onto the base.
But they are not Peter Layton's signature and it is a bit of Mdina Earthtones.

What is worrying is that the bidding has gone a fair bit over what I would expect this sort of Earthtones vase to go for. The bidders appear to think it is the correct signature. >:(
