Annulated knop
« on: March 18, 2014, 05:26:00 PM »
I bought this today at the same time as my "ugly little glass".

It is made of lead glass, tool marks to the bowl, pontil mark to the foot.

What I really like about it is the annulated knop formed from 6 discs.

Height 11.7cm, bowl dia 6.2 cm, foot dia 6.2 cm.

Date? 1800-20 unless someone out there thinks differently. Over to you for yoyr thoughts.

Stuart - nice glass - forgive me for being Mr. Picky ;D            Having just swotted up on annulated knops, I'm getting the impression from my books that correctly this type of knop should consist of an odd number of discs and be symmetrical in appearance - although this one does appear to have the six discs that you mention.
Annulated knops seem to have been popular in the first half of the C18  -  so is your reason for dating this to the early C19 due to the presence of what appears to be a bladed knop?
I'm not suggesting this glass is earlier than you are saying, but just a few thoughts in passing.

Assume you mean a snapped pontil? :)

Snapped pontil - yes

Bladed knop - makes me think 1800-20, but come back to me on this.

Annulated knop - yes I'd read in Ash's book about the number of rings as being odd in number. However this annulated knop is not symmetrical and the number of rings is definitely six - I've checked several times.

 HI ,
With 18th c glass the numbers are odd , in the 19th they can be anything , here is a good example ,

Peter

Many thanks for your input.

Does this mean you agree with 1800-20?

Thanks

Stuart

 Hi ,
Sorry ,not really , it could be any of your suggestions , not really the sort of thing that excites me so never really bothered to look into them .

   cheers ,
               Peter.
