Early Welz Vase ca 1890 - A first example
« on: March 30, 2014, 12:18:47 AM »
I was lucky enough to get this from a collector / seller in my area. First saw it on a Facebook post and figured out it was available, and local.  It is the first example of this earlier Welz production I have had the pleasure of handling.

Generally I do not buy glass that is damaged, but this piece was an exception for me. It has a couple of small bubble pops and a fracture near the body on one of the handles.

The vase stands at 11 inches in height and is done in a decor shown in Truitt I under the Welz production. The example in Truitt is a different shape and a light brown and white version of the decor. I will post an image of an example of that version also. I have to say the blue is quite a bit more outstanding... at least for me. Considering the decor was developed in 1890 or so, it is amazingly like some of the psychedelic patterns from posters in the 1960's.

The applied handles and base are done in a satin glass. The interior is a thick white lining layer. Well executed, and large of stature, this is a welcome addition to my Welz collection and a nice example of some of their early production.

Just a few additional pics, and an example just like the one in Truitt.

ooh you lucky thing.
I love this decor, very intricately done and such a fabulous effect.
It reminds me of the Clichy vases somewhat in the effect and also Escher.

I found this example in a closed auction post from a brick and mortar house in the US. Image used here with their blessing....  This example is nine inches tall.....  Something for me to look for  :-)
