It is mica, not silver foil, (which would have reacted with the glass).

and apart from that, I'm keeping quiet, having discovered mica is a lot more common in old glass than I had previously believed and having made a prat of myself again. ;D

Sue - in my eyes you are never that.........   I always consider you are very clever when it comes to glass :-*

Spare a thought for me.........  I got it completely wrong, with a little help from Mr. Gulliver...........  I should stick to collecting clear glass. ;D

Well well this certainly caused an interesting debate...thanks everyone for your comments...fascinating stuff. So I take it I did ok with my purchase...they certainly look gorgeous now I have washed them and got the years of grim off them. ;D
