amertyst vase with rd number
« on: June 27, 2014, 07:38:18 PM »
apologies, in advance i do not have a photograph of this vase,i saw it in an antique shop and could only get the rd number.
it has a trumpet bowl  and a turned over foot of about 6 mm. overall height is about 100mm.
the rd number is 5433290,that places it around 1908 to 1909.
i have the glass association book of rd numbers but no actual mention of this number.
any help would be appreciated
thank you

Design registered by Thomas West Carnie on 5 June 1909. In S&W pattern book for 1923 as 53254. Also made by Whitefriars in a smaller ribbed form in various colours

The fact that your example had a stamped registration number suggests to me that it would have been by S&W - I can't recall seeing any Whitefriars glass with a registration number, although I haven't owned this particular shape and therefore happy to be corrected.   :)

thanks Chris and Steve, the item i saw was an engraved rd number or possibly acid etched.
if i go back to the shop to check on that i might end up buying it ,it looks a very nice thing.

These seem to have been made for Thomas Carnie or to his design by both companies; some have rd numbers, others do not but by the time the shape appears in the 1931 catalogue, the registration would have expired. My S&W one is unribbed
