Candlesticks
« on: November 20, 2015, 01:32:43 PM »
Hi everyone

I picked these up about a month ago, I've drawn a bit of a blank as they are similar to some depression glass that I've seen.  Can anyone help me out with identification please?

These are commonly attributed as Imperial Glass Company for the Metropolitan Museum of Art; whether that's correct or not I wouldn't like to say!

Do they say MMA on the underside?

Hi Cherry,

Great candlesticks!

This is a design from S Reich & Co, dating from the 1934 catalogue. The Reich section has not yet been completed on Glass Trinket Sets, but they will be there when I get it finished.

Might I ask if you could do me a photo of them with a plain white background and no flash that I can add to the GTS website as a reference please, as I don't see many of these around?

Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

These are commonly attributed as Imperial Glass Company for the Metropolitan Museum of Art; whether that's correct or not I wouldn't like to say!

Several companies made candlesticks with the dolphin body, but with different shaped feet and candle cups. Some were from the USA, others from mainland Europe.  This one is known to be Reich but is very similar to an American one.

Der Kerzenleuchter mit dem Delphin auf quadratischem Stufensockel Abb. 2003-2/118 gleicht einer amerikanischen Produktion (Spillman, American and European Pressed Glass in the Corning Museum, S. 356, Nr. 139, United States, ca. 1930“, H 26,5 cm, D 9,5 cm).

Thank you for the explanation Anne!

These were the one's I'd found; they're really similar to the photos Cherry provided:

Same fluted tops, same dots around the candleneck, and the same conjoined tail on a square base too - I hope you can see why I'd be confused?

Adrian, thank you for posting the image of those, that *is* interesting.  I think we need to explore this pattern some more...   and yes I can quite see why you suggested these as the ID.  As always, every time we find an answer it throws up another two questions as well!  ;D

Thank you everybody for your help, the amber glass ones are lovely too.  I think I did well with these, charity shop find, I paid £10 for the pair, so a bargain for some lovely candlesticks!

Haven't a clue Cherry, sorry. Value is something which is so subjective, that many folks don't like suggesting it.
