Whitefriars 1930s Streaky Tumbler Vase ?
« on: March 01, 2016, 07:56:18 AM »
Hi, I'd be grateful if someone could confirm that this actually is a Marriott Powell Streaky Tumbler Vase and not some look-alike.
I've seen an almost identical one on the Whitefriars Website--although predominantly green, this one also has streaks of brown and yellow ( straw opal? )

It's 20cms high with a rim diam of about 13cms
It has a circular polished out pontil mark.
It certainly looks streaky.
There are quite a few bubbles ( which can be felt on the inside surface ) and one or two stones in the glass.
It has a lot of base wear.
If you give it a good flick the ring tone seems to go on forever !

I've had problems uploading pics but they will be coming !
Thanks for looking.
Scott

Hi,
I'm coming round to thinking that my vase must be a Powell Streaky Tumbler.
At least no one has said that it isn't !
The impurities in the glass made me doubt whether it could be Whitefriars. I wouldn't have thought these inclusions would have been acceptable to WF in the 30s--I could well be wrong of course.
I suppose it could have been sold as a second--if they had seconds then.

I've also since read that WF had a well controlled annealing process in the 30s; which might explain its impressive ring.
I've also noticed that the glass has a lot of striations in it; perhaps suggesting that it was blown without the aid of a mould. I don't know whether WF even used moulds then ?

Anyway my charity shop finds tend to become either keepers or returners. This one is definitely going to be a keeper regardless of whether it's WF or not!
Thanks for looking.

Thanks once again Anne for uploading my pics.

Best to ask Nigel Benson he specialises in Whitefriars and Nazeing the two most likely , Whitefriars did have impurities in that era as did Nazeing .

Hi,

I've been to see Dr Frankenstein, so the brain's now sorted - well perhaps?? :o

This is indeed Powell/Whitefriars IMHO. As John said there were often impurities in W?F's glass, particularly in the Streaky range - it's in the nature of the look they were trying to achieve.

Cheers, Nigel
