Large blue lead? bowl - spiral design - any ideas?
« on: March 25, 2016, 04:39:01 PM »
Hi,

This came as an "extra" in an auction lot - not my field at all - just wondered if it's for the charity shop or worth selling on  ;)

Its light blue, very heavy, a good "ring" to it, approx. 27.5cm diameter x 8cm high, applied foot with ground out pontil scar (quite a bit of base wear) , a spiral design ridge on the outside of the bowl - is it mould blown? Anyone any idea of maker /age? (the pictures came out a bit more "royal" blue than it really is)

thanks in advance
Roberta

When ive had whitefriars in a similar colour to yours i always convince myself ive a rare sky blue colour piece which turns out to be saphire usually, Hope yours is sky blue as would be a good value if so but its a nice piece in its own right without nice find lovely bowl. Maybe check the colours on the whitefriars website that the bowl was made in? Ive not been able to find my book as yet sorry.

Haven't found the colour list but I'm pretty sure it's sapphire! Thanks for the Whitefriars tip off  :)

I've just been perusing my Sotheby's Concise Encyclopedia of Glass, ('91) looking for something else, when I found what I am pretty sure is this, illustrated on p. 172.

It's called "Bolgeblick" with two dots above the o, designed by Aino Mariso-Aalto, 1932.
There is a note under the caption which reads;
"This range of pressed glass, designed in 1932 by the architect wife of Alvar Aalto, was made until 1956 by Karhula. Recently, some pieces have been produced again.
I'm not getting very far with a search on the name though, in finding your dish. ???

Just had a look and they are very similar, but the base or foot looks different on the Aino Mariso-Aalto one.

It didn't help me that the illustration in my book is that same peculiar ice blue colour.
I don't know what to make of it - something about the colour makes my guts scream; "this was made yesterday".
I know they're wrong, but it doesn't stop them.  ;D

It's all just personal taste - please, nobody be offended. I just don't like pale colours. ::)
