Russian orange overlay cut and engraved egg - found maker
« on: March 31, 2016, 01:33:42 PM »
I honestly never in a million years thought I'd track this down.
But somehow I think I have!
I think this was made by Workshop "Rosvuzdizayn" in St Petersburg.  I can't believe I managed to find this.
See egg on stand here from their catalogue:
http://rosvuzdisain.ru/rosvuz/sites/default/files/styles/200/public/izdelie/50.jpg?itok=j1lMrQNR

And my egg below on photo attached.
At the very least it proves my egg was made in Russia and I'm pretty sure comparing the details on that egg, that the Workshop is where it was from.

I have also found two sets of Gus Khrustalny glasses that have this identical slightly sheeny orange overlay cut to clear - image of one set below:

So... I think it is possible the glass was blown at Gus Khrustalny (before it closed) and finished at this Workshop.  Or... it was blown and finished at this workshop. But I think all the evidence at least points to it being absolutely definitely Russian :)

I'm stunned.

I modified my post Ivo to include the glasses from Gus Khrustalny and the info that it might have been blown there before they closed the factory but then cut and engraved at the Workshop.

I just can't believe I tracked this down.  I'm amazed.
My Russian is up to three words now  ;D (can recognise egg, glass and Bakhmetev :))

No, they cost 'From £33' :)
That doesn't mean the cut and engraved one cost £33.  There are a number of eggs they produce. Some are hideous imho, but some of them are beautiful.  And I have to say, my egg is stunning.  It really is... I'm not just saying that because I bought it  ;D

I've just noticed that under the  groups of eggs it specifically also says 'short run'.
So that is probably why I've been unable to find it on the net anywhere.
Nice to know they are limited editions.  Mine's not numbered but others I've seen on the net are numbered.  Some are signed by the artist as well - or appear to be - first name only.  I think that's a really nice touch and gives credit to the engraver.

Been looking for a long while for a red gilded one that I could afford and that had a Russian label.
This one was a snip fortunately and is in perfect condition.
Just over 4" tall, hollow but very heavy and much heavier than the other two.  It has lots of engraved gilded work all over it.
For some reason, something I came across on my searches made me think this might date to early 90s but I can't find my reference now.   Of course it could well have been made last year as well :)
I assume the label says something like 'manufactured in the style of' then ' K Faberge', then wording I cannot read, then 'Russia'.  So I am hopeful it was made and engraved/gilded in Russia.

ah, I think translating this label here
http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/NqIAAOSw5VFWLpA3/s-l1600.jpg

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Ruby-Red-Cranberry-Gold-Gilt-Crystal-Russian-Egg-/111976574706?hash=item1a1252eef2:g:qD8AAOSwT5tWLpAc
it says:
'is made based on'
then
'K. Faberge
St Petersburg'

then at the bottom
'Russia'

So - hoping that because the label is in Russian it may be Russian, and also because it says Russia at the bottom.  But the wording isn't absolutely specific and could be misread as 'Is made based on K Faberge St Petersburg Russia' rather than  the 'Russia' part denoting where it was made.
(mine did not cost $160 btw :)  )

A smaller blue one to add.  Intricately engraved vines and grapes in three separate panels.
Smaller than the others but I bought it for the engraving and the label (some have engraved flowers on that are in a sort of thirties style engraving of roses and I don't like that style.  This is more flowing, less stylised and I prefer it.)
This also has an intact label in Russian on the base.  I think the style of engraving and the label are the same as that on the red one although the label is a different colour.
I've not yet worked out where these are from.  There are two other Russian labeled types that I've found however the engraving on the eggs is not in  style I like and I think they are from different workshops (Magrav? and CO? although am no closer to finding out where those types are made).

I think this one is 'vintage' as is the red one. The gilding is worn and they feel a bit older rather than made in the last few years (although that is a subjective/instinctive judgement, not made through any particular knowledge).
There is another one here with the same label (although would definitely question the seller's dates of 1920s, as pretty sure they are much later than that).
https://www.etsy.com/listing/202079981/imperial-russian-cobalt-blue-glass-egg

Those with this Russian label all have a particular style - it's different to other eggs with the other labels - hard to explain but when you've looked at a few it's easier to 'group' them by the way the engraving is executed and the style of design oddly (although at a first glance they might all look to have similarities).  There are not that many with this label on the base and it's taken me a while to find one I liked that also had the complete label.
