Engraved Bohemian Small Glass
« on: August 03, 2016, 08:35:33 PM »
HIt a home sale & while glass was nice it was priced high but as I was leaving I noticed this small engraved glass 5 1/4" height & 2 1/2" diameter. Only thing that was offered by the lady was that the glass was the oldest piece her aunt had & the aunt's mother bought it in Europe. Price was reasonable so I bought it. Heavy as the devil for its size & it rings, 8 point cut star bottom with some wear & all kinds of cutting & polished panels on the stem. Horse engraved is the older skinny head type, the dog engraving is quite small & has a funny looking man in some type of older dress apparal. Simply looking for ideas although I think Bohemian & age I don't have a clue. Appreciate the help. Ken

it looks to be an interesting glass Ken.........    am sure you're correct about the origin, and almost certainly a goblet.              Age wise  -  assuming it is a genuine period piece  -  then my suggestion would be c. 1840 give or take a little.           Whether that is an authentic coat of arms I've no idea  -  it may have a connection to some family but equally it might be simply a form of stylized representation.
Am sure others will have better ideas.

It is possible the coronet might be for a Marquis (or Marquess) and the dog is a Talbot Sejant I think.
Not sure if it helps at all.
The base of the foot is unusual.

I don't know anything at all about horses, but in a document about early 19th century engraved horses, there are a few that looks like yours (the long mane etc) and are described as being arab stallions.  There is also a reference to a Carle Vernet Lithograph - nice to look on google search at those, they are pretty amazing.

This one is described as a drawing after a lithograph by Carle Vernet for example - similar mane
