well, if it turns out not to be VSL, how about looking at J G Durand  -  many of their animals have a similar well defined linear style of modelling.

I'm pretty sure it isn't VSL, like Paul mentioned it is more in the style of Durand.

There is a Durand greyhound here which is worth comparison in respect of style and base. The greyhound is marked too.

Do not get fooled by the epithet of "vintage". Durand is a recent (1980s/90s) brand name, introduced to sell tableware without getting caught in the cristal d'arques trap. Which it is.

I came across this site and they've id'd it as a tiger by Georges Chevalier for Baccarat. There's an image at the bottom.

Maybe something to investigate...

There's a page on Georges Chevalier on the Baccarat website here: http://us.baccarat.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-bct_us-Site/en_US/HubPage-Designers?cid=Georges%20Chevalier showing his panther which is stylistically different. It might be worth dropping an email to Baccarat with photos to ask for confirmation - not that I am doubting the info on the NGF page but if you can ask then it's worth doing. :)
