Art Deco Opalescent Storks Sculpture...Maker?
« on: August 11, 2016, 05:09:44 AM »
Hello,

I recently bought this Art Deco era Opalescent glass Storks sculpture, unsigned. I thought it might be Verlys, but it's not in any catalog I own...

I had one a while ago with the remnants of a diamond shaped label. Unfortunately the only word that remained legible was 'France'. I too thought Verlys but haven't found this model in their catalogues or the McPeek books. I think sadly it will remain a mystery until one shows up with an intact label.

Here's the old thread about my copy of the figure: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3956.msg30913.html#msg30913

I'd forgotten that a copy with a Verlys mark turned up on ebay. Sadly though the link no longer works and I'm not sure if I trust the attribution now having seen quite a few fake Verlys marks in the years since posting. The shape of the label though is quite distinctive and that might help confirm the maker if only we can find some other French Verlys labels to compare with...

Thanks for that information. Yes, I have noticed an increase in fake Verlys marks too....especially on Inwald/Barolac pieces...

I have seen one of these attributed to Sabino. An avenue to explore, as I can't find where I saw it anymore.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

if this were Sabino, shouldn't it be a boulevard, rather than an avenue?  ;D

Hmm: early 17th century (in sense 2): from French, feminine past participle of avenir ‘arrive, approach’, from Latin advenire, from ad- ‘towards’ + venire ‘come’.

I'll stick with Avenue (being a lady :)  )
