Topic: very confused... is this a John Deacons Paperweight?

it is marked IJI 98 on the bottom.
if it was a JD paperweight it would be marked JD.
but I have seen a similar JD paperweight with the same twisted and colored design on ebay.
the top part is just different.
any info on who made my item would be appreciated.
I posted on the forum on the other site but got no answer...

Whilst the image of the signature cane is too small to be readable - it's guessable (once you have seen it before ): it reads "J" for J-Glass (i.e. Deacons) with 1981 written "around it" for the year of manufacture.

so the J means Jay glass?
that is 1 of the things I have read about on ebay.
is this also what I see referred as the "cane" signature?
is all Jay or J glass related to John Deacons?
then why is mine not signed JD (like I have seen on Ebay)?
also you mention the date 1981?
the # on my piece is 98.
I know I am very confused... this is why I posted here.
will try to post a better pic of the roundish marking later on...

J-Glass was a John Deacons enterprise (from 1979 to 1983) - later he used "JD" canes. He had co-workers at J-Glass, e.g. Allan Scott.
Your weight is not numbered (98) - the "98" is part of "1981".
This is not usually referred to as "cane signature" but "signature cane" - although cane signature will also be recognised, I guess.
If you send me your mail address (envelope symbol left hand side), I can mail you an image of the "J-1981 signature cane" (which I cannot post here for copyright reasons).

I wonder if I can help explain things here. John Deacons joined Strathearn Glass in 1966 and was one of six workers from this factory who left in1968 to start Perthshire Paperweights. John had always wanted to have his own company so he left Perthshire in 1978 and set up a company he called J Glass. He chose this name as he had seen the way some antique Bohemian weights were marked with the date. In German Jahr means year and this is sometime shortened to J and the year example J1848 = year 1848.

As a  company J glass needed to mark/their weights and John had a couple of glassmakers assisting him so they all used the J or J and date signature cane Example J1981 to sign their work. During the time the J Glass Company was in operation John did not use a JD cane only J. You may wish to note that two other brands of paperweights were made in the J Glass factory. John was asked by an American Import Company to make a new brand of paperweight specially for them so he created the name St Kilda and all these weights had an StK signature cane. John was also asked to make a new brand of weight for a dealer in America just starting up in business so he created St Andrew and these weights had a StA cane but less than 200 were made so these are relatively rare.

Please note many J Glass weights were limited editions of 101 so if there is a number scratched on the base of the weight it is the edition number
Due to a recession, J Glass closed in 1983 so John set up a furnace in a small building attached to his house and made paperweights and other glassware, he put his JD or JHD signature cane in these. John is still working in the same building today and making some superb weights
