An opalescent blue glass pedestal sugar bowl with Rd. 150401 embossed on the bowl interior near the base. Stands 5.5 inches tall with a rim diameter of 6.25 inches. (Permission for the re-use of these photos on the GMB granted by Melanie Smith).
The owner had assumed that it was a Davidson blue pearline piece but was puzzled that she couldn't match it with a specific Davidson pattern, but RD 150401 was registered by Greener & Co. on 5 June 1890.
The pattern on the bowl exterior consists of a ring of hexagonal 'rosettes' above a radial spray of stylised lanceolate leaves. Jenny Thompson (page 15) describes the design as 'Pattern imit. cut mostly', so it would seem that the design is for the decorative surface pattern rather than the shape of the piece, and I imagine that the sugar bowl is part of a suite in the design.
I can see why the owner of the sugar bowl was initially confused because there are some strong design similarities with Davidson's RD 176566 of 15 August 1891 which also has 'rosettes' as a major feature of the design pattern (and often appears in blue pearline glass), but the Davidson rosettes in that case are actually octagonal and are separated from each other by vertical ribs.
I'm pretty sure that I have never seen a piece in this Greener design before. Does anyone have photos to show of other shapes in the design or other colours in the design, please?
On checking through my Greener & Co. RD reference photos, the earliest that I can find in this blue opalescent glass is Greener & Co. RD 138051, registered on 14 November 1889. Then there seem to be opalescent blue examples of most of their RDs through until RD 304505 of 3 September 1897.
