Topic: Square bowl, signed R. Lalique, unusual

I came across this square bowl at a fair today. It is about 9 inches square in a streaky white glass, signed 'R Lalique France' on the base. The foot is square and the bowl curves up quite sharply. The bowl seems moulded. The base is not smooth; there is a slight ripple in the surface of the glass. Since the seller was asking a fair wedge of cash for the bowl I didn't buy it but he let me take photos.

I have never seen this type of bowl attributed to Lalique. The seller said he had taken advice on the piece and was told it was made about the time of René Lalique's death. That would place it to shortly after 1945.

Can anyone provide more information about the bowl, please? Many thanks.

The signature, shape and especially the colour all look concerning. I suspect not purchasing was the prundent option.

I didn't give the bowl a second look when I saw it. When the seller said it was by Lalique I was rather incredulous. The only reason I gave it a chance was the suggested date of manufacture and the second expert opinion obtained by the seller, whose specialty was scientific instruments not glass.

About the colour of the glass, could it be re-used opalescent glass? I don't understand the technicalities of this, but is it a possibility given that 1945 would have been a tough time to get materials?

I suppose anything is possible, however the quality looks poor. The colour reminds me more of modern recycled glass.

I'm getting quite good at recognising it, there are tons of it in charity shops and the first labelled bit I found, some of the writing had come off, so it read Fartylite, which kind of stuck...

I too suspect somebody practising their dremmelling, Anton.

I know they've got different bases and rims, but there are loads of variations in shapes.

This Partylite stuff is very similar to some Kosta designs, with the cloudy swirling effects inside.

ooh well done Sue.  Is partylite stuff made in Taiwan? something in my memory or not?

I'm sure I had a white large fruit bowl like this but it said made in Spain I thought.
