Large Limited Edition signed etched bowl
« on: November 28, 2017, 03:31:04 PM »
Hi,
Trying to identify the engraver/etcher for this 7" tall bowl. Found in a Caithness Crystal box with no paperwork. Believe it is Caithness, because of its shape, but can find no references to it. Base etched "The oaks in autumn" with signature and No:193 which suggests it's a limited edition.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Welcome to the board. A picture of the whole thing would help immensely

Hi,
Thanks for your message, I did try to put on  full image, but was stopped by the size restrictions. Hopefully I have resolved this and have attached another picture.
Kind regards,
Steve

this is Sue's area of expertise, usually, but had a look thru Mark Hill's book on Caithness and can's see any designers names starting with what possibly looks like Diane - and don't see this particular design.
The obvious answer might be to send Caithness an email with picture. :)

This does not look "etched" at al, I'm pretty sure it's cameo.
Cameo bits are all limited edn's, I think, but I only know of Helen MacDonald's Ivy pattern.
Caithness did produce a load of superior and limited edition things - I've seen a Grall charger, also by Helen.
However, there is not any comprehensive list of what was made, by whom or when, not that I know of.
I just occassionally encounter a bit of it.

I've not seen anything like this before, not with all those colours in it.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

It looks like cameo that's been stained to me. It is also possible that just the blank is Caithness

Cameo? Etched? Hard to say from a single photo. I agree with Christine's thoughts of the coloured parts being stained.

Looks to me as if the main light source is top left. The shadowing in the upper left portions of the coloured areas indicate Intaglio work with the lower areas being stained. Clever work with the tree trunks and branches being mostly on the lower level.

Thanks to all who have responded,
I have taken a few more images of the cameo or etching (David Bailey I'm not)
I found this in a Caithness Crystal Kings Lynn Norfolk box, it does appear to be a shape they used, but agree there is potential for a blank that has had further work
I read the signature as Dianne Mc????, but got no further
I considered contacting the factory, but they have had a chequered recent history, and don't appear to have a cogent contact point
Thanks once again to you all,
Kind regards,
Steve

If you are on Facebook, there is a Caithness Glass group to which Helen MacDonald belongs. She should know.

Hi,

I was wondering whether it is sandblasted (a resist being used in helping to create the various layers) and then stained.

I would also favour the likelihood of it being a blank used by an independent artist.

As Christine says worth checking the Facebook group.

Cheers, Nigel
