Perthshire Paperweight with Ca in centre
« on: October 18, 2018, 04:46:32 PM »
Hello, I have a Perthshire paperweight with what looks linke the letters Ca in the centre. I wondered if anyone can help me with what this indicates? Sorry no image but my photo was too large to attach.
Thanks!

Hi,
Welcome to the board, your description doesn't sound familiar to me, we really need images to ID a weight, this thread  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34093.0.htmlhas info and a link for resizing images to paste. Ideally top down, side and base views are best to help with positive ID's.

Hi AJY, welcome. And thanks for the additional images.

I have taken the opportunity to invert and enlarge the central section of the image to get a better understanding of the possible "Ca".

At fist I thought it could just be a poorly formed "P", but no. Then I thought it might be a "light bulb". In the enlargement below it does look like "Ca".

It is clearly not one of the weights that included a "date letter" (A thru Z).

Is the base of those weights a colour ground or just clear glass?  And how is the base finished - unpolished or flat polished or concave polished? Is there a "P" cane in the base?

Got me stumped too, there were a number made with a PCA  cane for the Paperweight Collectors Association, maybe an early trial without the P seeing as it's already a paperweight?

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry about the inverted images! The bases are both blue glass and both concave and polished. One has letters on the base and the other has nothing. The collectors association is a good idea.

The Perthshire weights with the 'Ca' cane were made for the Clydesdale Bank.

Thanks Alan, that’s interesting. It’s just something that’s been bugging me so it’s good to have an answer. Now I wonder if these were awards for staff, or gifts for corporate purposes or just really nice branch accessories. It gives me a starting point to investigate further.
