Frosted Uranium Glass Vase
« on: June 06, 2020, 11:02:24 AM »
There are a few of these 20cm. vases online and they've been attributed with a question mark to various different makers. 20thcenturyglass.com say it's "probably by Sowerby" and it does resemble their "Argyle" vase shown in the 1933 catalogue. I think it looks more like a Czech piece and I believe Sowerby did collaborate with a designer at Inwald. I can't find one in any catalogue and it would be interesting if someone can give an attribution.

I think they are Sowerby. The colour is spot on and they are very common in the UK. I think I've a frosted and an unfrosted pair (4). I've thought for a long while that it's likely that Sowerby made commissions for somewhere like Woolworths; the market would be about right for Sowerby stuff. And commissioned stuff only appears in order or pattern books, not catalogues.

The colour appears to be a good match for my Sowerby "Roses" frosted green bowl, http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pid=1230

Thanks Anne, I've just realised the colour is also a good match for my Sowerby "Lady on a tree stump".

That slightly yellowy green always makes me think Sowerby in the first instance. :)

From Mike Tomlin's additions to his website, List 31 P.34, there is a clear diagram of the 2505 8" vase which matches.

Now I've been able to update my website (and given names/ numbers to a Beverley posy, Flora vases and a candlestick) :-)
