Walsh Pompeian? Bowl. ID = possibly Biot
« on: October 30, 2020, 03:29:53 PM »
I bought this online in the hope that it was uranium glass and had a Walsh mark, sadly neither  :(. It is 10" across, has a domed foot, a partially ground pontil with just a ring of rough glass and has some age. It doesn't appear to be as bubbly as it might be for Pompeian and I'm not sure if Walsh made Pompeian in non-uranium green, but I'm still hopeful. It was sold as possibly being by "White Friers".

Looks more like Stevens & Williams Peat glass to me.

Some examples

Thanks very much John, I was just about to reply regarding the Keith Murray/ S&W/ Royal Brierly connection which makes me very happy. I thought my bowl had something interesting about it when I bought it and it wasn't expensive  ;D. I also have a pair of bottles/vases with a similar finish to one of your photos which I'll post.

I couldn't find any reference to S&W "Peat" design but I have found it called "silver rain",

Don't remember where the name Peat came from now, on page 148, 20th Century British Glass by Charles Hajdamach it states the range is called "Sapphire Cased Bubbly" and "Cased Bubbly" in the pattern books. The first design for a pink bucket shaped vase has the pencil annotation added "Silver Showers" - a far more romantic sounding name and no surprise it has been picked up by sellers.

hang on ... do we know this was a S&W shape?  There were other companies that made bubbly glass.

And can you describe the pontil mark please?  Is it smoothly round cut and polished.  It looks rough at the edges to me on the photograph looking down from above?

Here's a photo of the pontil mark, it has been partially ground leaving just a ring of rough glass. I've seen some other S&W vases which have this feature, also the same sort of irregularly sized and shaped bubbles and the same rim. John's first photo shows a similar shape but I haven't found one exactly like mine.
