As I continue to put my book together on Manchester glass, I thought I would show one of the unregistered but attributable pieces which come up from time to time. This one can be identified as butter number 38, using surviving catalogues. It dates to the early 1880s, most of their designs at this time were registered, it is unusual to find one of the few that are not. One of the things I hope to do when writing up the history of these companies is to use the pattern numbers to estimate rates of introduction of new patterns for different items, sugars, creamers, butters etc, and put a date to when each company started to make tableware sets.
