Jacobean Regd...but Canada
« on: January 26, 2022, 04:47:52 PM »
I got these pepper pots today for show. I thought Jacobean was only made in Czechoslovakia by Inwald or in Britain by Davidson - but both of these are marked ‘Canada’.

Couldn’t find anything else linking Jacobean to Canada with a quick search although I did find a pair on eBay Canada...but made in England :)

In addition to ‘Jacobean Regd Canada’, they also have a number on the side at the bottom, presumably mould numbers. One is 28, the other is 31. I suppose you could infer from that that they made quite a few.

Something somewhere is ringing bells about patents being applied for, for designs made in other countries.
There is a fair bit of Carltonware marked as "registered in Australia" because for some weird reason that is where the patent was needed.
(Do not ask me to try to understand the vagaries of buisiness and the legal wangles, exemptions and exceptions they make for themselves.   ::) )

Are the lids plastic or glass? I always get excited when I see cruets with glass lids.  ;D

I think it's just that the design was registered in Canada, not that they were made there.

I've had a quick search of the Canadian IP databases and can't find any mention of Jacobean or Davidson for glass items there https://www.canada.ca/en/services/business/ip.html

They’re not very exciting, plastic lids :)

That’s interesting. I hadn’t considered that it could mean registered in Canada. If that was the case, you would have thought to present the information in that way would be misleading and possibly infringe some country of origin law.

Things went a bit odd during and after the world wars. Lots of things just got labelled "foreign".
I imagine certain countries of origins might have been less popular at the time too, and would want to pretend the goods came from somewhere else, so as not to prejudice sales.
I'm sure there was some legal reason for Carlton registering itself in Oz.
Vases got themselves "celery" labels to avoid tax.

I suspected plastic lids  ;) - they are not quite as clear as glass ones.

You might be surprised at some of the places Jacobean turns up.
My most unusual place I've found a drinking glass was in an illustration in a very old copy of Gerald Durrell book, when he was invited for a drink with some local people he encountered in a jungle while searching for some rare beast.
Jacobean glasses on the homemade table in the light of a fire on the ground, long ways away from cities or amenities.

Expanding on Anne’s reply, searching for ‘Jacobean’ as a Canadian trademark shows that from 1865 to date, it has been used and abandoned twice. Once from 1984 to 1985 for a cheese product (by the British Milk Marketing Board) and then from 1985 to 1986 for a protective coating (paint etc).
