List of Japanese glass makers
« on: January 19, 2007, 02:08:18 PM »
The following might help in trying to ID glass that is otherwise unknown. Compiled with the help from Glen's excellent article:
http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/Japan.html Dead Link

The Ryukyu Village
Combines many different workshops and is based on one of the southern islands - the Murano of Japan, perhaps? :D
Ryukyu - http://www.wonder-okinawa.jp/009/english/index.html Dead Link
(in japanese)      - http://www.ryukyu-glass.co.jp/ Dead Link
(in japanese)      - http://www.ryukyu-glass.co.jp/shop/index.html  Dead Link, now at  https://ryukyu-glass.shop-pro.jp/

The last link does show various examples of the glassware produced.

Under the Ryukyu banner are the following workshops:
Edo
Maeda Glass Factory
Okuhara Glass Factory
Machinato Glass Factory
Ryukyu Glass Factory
Kokusai Glass Craft, Inc.
Oyafuso Folk Craft Glass
Okinawa Kotobuki Glass Craft Inc.
Giyaman Kan

-------------------------------

Other factories:

Toyo Sasaki Glass - www.toyo.sasaki.co.jp/e/
Hario - http://www.hario.jp/ (this is a new address - updated as at July 2013)
Kagami - http://www.kagami.jp/
Toyo Sasaki - http://www.toyo.sasaki.co.jp/e/index.htm Dead Link
Soga Glass - http://www.sogaglass.co.jp/en/

Probably not complete, but can always be added to.

Three other makers of art glass - very Murano style for lots of their outpot - but the quality is always excellent.  Here are four examples from my own collection that are labelled or I have seen a duplicate that has been labelled.
 -  Kamei
 -  Hineri
 -  Handcraft

I came across a maker I'd not heard of before this evening -
Kurata Craft Glass
according to this site Stanislav Žampach spent a short  time there in  1994 and 2001
http://www.prazskagalerie.cz/en/artists&id=45 Dead Link
and I found this vase with a label on (ebay listing so it will disappear in time unfortunately)

Kamei was an exporter, they did not make glass. It appears, based on examples examined, that they exported glass made by several makers.

Hineri was a line of glass made by Iwatsu

Handcraft was also a line of glass made by a glass house, but I don't remember which one.
Glass mutt. I collect anything I like & find interesting & is of reasonable quality.

Kurata (Kurata Craft Glass) was a line of glass made by Joetsu Glass.

Thank you for the additional info and corrections :)

I've also just noticed that lilac/purple beaked vase that Ross posted in an earlier post!  I have an amber version of that I think. I'm sure I put it on the board and remember there being discussion as to whether it could be Murano or Czech.
I'll have a look for it.

You are most welcome. I am not sure what kind of activity there is on the FaceBook Japanese Art Glass group, as I do not use Facebook, but there has been some discussion on Collectors Weekly by a few collectors of Japanese art glass....

I've become interested in it after coming to realise how many pieces I've had have been Japanese. The lack of information can be frustrating. I've been relying on the same kind of links that are above in order to find out more, but it would be great to have more resources.
I do wonder how much interest there is in their art glass within Japan. There must be collectors I would have thought. Has anyone come across any Japanese blogs or anything like that dedicated to their glass?
