Edinburgh Crystal - Maker's Base Stamps
« on: February 01, 2007, 02:04:39 PM »
I have seen a number of Edinburgh Crystal glasses and decanters for sale with "EDINBURGH SCOTLAND" etched on the base purporting to be the Maker's Mark.

I know there are various marks.....the very old E & L marks, the oval  "Made in Scotland Edinburgh", "Edinburgh Crystal" and the latest Lion rampant....... but I have never heard of EDINBURGH SCOTLAND being an official base mark of the EC company.

Does anyone have any information on the EDINBURGH SCOTLAND mark please.

Thanks

Perfectly fine as far as I know. I've just checked my Edinburgh crystal wineglasses, bought new, and this is the mark they have. I'm from Edinburgh and Edinburgh crystal wineglasses are something I have given as wedding gifts for many years. I seem to remember they used not to be marked, and was irritated when I saw the mark appearing on them, so I do think it's contemporary. I do not know if it means that Edinburgh is where it was made, but I suspect it does.

Not seen it, though I have bought examples with whatever different marks I have found.

Are you able to date any of the marks not shown here?

My wineglasses (pattern "Iona") were bought within the last 10-12 years. The mark is not like those you showed, Frank, it's just two straight parallel lines of capital letters, EDINBURGH, with SCOTLAND underneath. The letters are spaced so that both words are the same length.

My newest piece is a miniature mantel clock, sand-blasted "Edinburgh Crystal" 2 or 3 years old.

Okay, our crystal has the last etching shown, were mostly purchased in the '70's (I inherited them with my husband  ;) ) and are the "lochnagar" pattern.

This isn't relevant to the new marks, although this vase is Edinburgh Crystal.  I haven't seen uranium glass from them before - maybe I've missed it?  The acid stamp puts it to 1927/39, and it's just under 6.5" high.  I thought it might be of interest, as I've not put it on the GMB before...
